Our collection boasts a range of wines, with a particular emphasis on our specialty, Kakotrygis, a delightful dry white wine. This light and aromatic varietal is cultivated exclusively on the island, offering a unique taste of the region. Additionally, we take pride in our Amoroso, a well-balanced dry red wine that captivates the palate. For a truly special experience, we also offer a limited volume of quality wine crafted from grapes grown on our family vineyard, which we warmly invite you to sample.
Pontiglio Winery
Established in 2014 in Lefkimmi, Corfu, Pontiglio Winery has its roots deeply intertwined with the rich tradition of vine and wine in the region. Our journey began by utilizing the raw material from our existing vines, which we have been cultivating since 1989-1990. These vines have been in our family for decades, representing a longstanding heritage that dates back to ancient times when Corfu and particularly Lefkimmi thrived in viticulture.
Unfortunately, over time, this tradition and the unique grape varieties of the area were on the verge of being lost. In the 1980s, subsidies were provided to locals to replace their vines, leading to the disappearance of many unique varieties. However, driven by our determination (Pontiglio), we took action to preserve and continue cultivating these precious vines. Our focus lies solely on local and unique varieties, producing wines that possess unrivaled character and are truly one-of-a-kind.
Additionally, our winery is dedicated to discovering and safeguarding other exceptional grape varieties that once existed on the island. Corfu, with its abundant wealth, was home to numerous distinct varieties. We have already identified a white wine grape variety, renowned for its exceptional wine according to the testimonies of the elders. However, this endeavor is an ongoing and challenging project, requiring time and resources. As a small winery, we embrace the task with great dedication.
Our philosophy revolves around experimentation and the pursuit of new varieties for wine production. We continuously refine and improve the varieties we are working with, as there are no ready-made recipes for them. Our Kakotrigis Orange, a remarkable experiment, has shown promising results and improvement each year. We also explore the potential of Kacotrygis sparkling wine with a second fermentation in the bottle, aligning with our vision for the future. Another variety we passionately cultivate is Skopelitiko or Skopolo, a black grape variety known for its complexity and unpredictability. Through our relentless efforts, we have become the sole winery producing wine from this exceptional variety.
Furthermore, we collaborate with local small farmers, incentivizing them to continue growing their vines on the condition that they preserve and protect the local varieties. This partnership allows us to support and sustain the local viticulture community while safeguarding the unique heritage of Corfu’s grape varieties.
