How to get to Meteora by train
The most convenient option for reaching Meteora is likely by utilizing the Metro system. Regardless of your starting point, there is likely to be a nearby metro station. Once within the metro system, navigating to the train station becomes remarkably straightforward.
For instance, suppose you find yourself at Athens International Airport and wish to travel to the central train station in Athens. In such a case, you can easily follow these simple instructions:
Embark on the Metro (Athens Airport Station – Blue line). The fare for a metro ticket from the airport is 8 Euros.
At Syntagma station, transition to the red line that is headed towards Anthoupoli.
Alight at Larissa Station, which serves as the principal train station in Greece.
Once at the train station, you have the opportunity to board a train destined for Kalampaka, the town located beneath Meteora. Kalambaka serves as a terminal station, obviating concerns about disembarking at the correct stop when traveling on a direct train. This is due to the fact that it is the final stop on the route.
It is important to note that certain train routes may lead to Paleofarsalos station. To avoid any confusion, it’s essential to ascertain whether your train is direct or not before boarding.
How to get to Meteora by bus
Acquiring a bus ride to Meteora poses a slightly more intricate process than obtaining a train journey. The bus terminal is situated in proximity to Kato Patissia station along the green line. Various routes can be taken to reach this location.
From any of the metro lines, it necessitates a transfer at Monastiraki station, subsequently embarking on the Green line directed towards Kifissia.
Upon reaching Kato Patisssia station, you have the choice of either walking approximately 1 kilometer to reach the bus terminal or opting for a taxi ride. The taxi fare should be between 3 and 5 Euros.
If you opt for the taxi option, it’s advisable to instruct the driver to transport you to Liossion Station rather than the Athens bus station.
Once at the bus terminal, you should get on a bus headed to Trikala, a sizable city in proximity to Kalampaka and Meteora. Upon arriving in Trikala, you can then catch a connecting bus to Kalampaka.
How to get to Meteora by car
Embarking on a road trip from Athens to Meteora is a straightforward journey. The most challenging part of the drive typically occurs while leaving Athens, particularly during peak traffic hours. Once you’ve navigated beyond the urban confines, your route will lead you onto highway E75. Remain on this thoroughfare until your arrival in Lamia city, where you’ll encounter an exit guiding you towards Lamia/Karditsa/Trikala.
The subsequent portion of the road presents its own set of challenges as you traverse the ups and downs of the Domokos mountain range after departing Lamia. This stretch entails about an hour of driving, characterized by numerous turns. Due to these twists and turns, exercising caution while behind the wheel is paramount. Upon successfully navigating the Domokos range, proceed in accordance with the road signs directing you towards Karditsa, then Trikala, and ultimately Kalampaka.
