Church of Panagia

Church of Panagia is the villages landmark which was built in 1919. This stone-built church is also known as the Virgin Mary in Panagia. Every year on the 15th of August a large festival is dedicated to Virgin Mary.

Cave of Agios Ioannis (Saint John)

The Cave of Agios Ioannis is one of the largest caves in the Cyclades with rich and impressive stalactites, stalagmites and a rare stalagmitic substance called “cave-milk”. The cave can be reached on foot, 30 minutes from Vourkaria Bay. The cave is very small, and you need to be careful not to bump your head. Opposite the entrance of the cave, there is another cave called, Giant Polyphemus.

Every year on the 28th of August, the day of John the Baptist, the big chamber is lit by candles of worshippers.

You can access the church on foot only, following a footpath. In the summer there is also a minibus that will bring you quite close to the church but then you will need to continue foot.

Church of Agios Georgios

The stone-built church of Agios Georgios is situated in the centre of the village and was built in 1834. The church was reconstructed in 1887. It is the most important church in the village and every year on the 23rd of April they hold a festival to honor their saint in the courtyard of the chapel.

Many people choose to hold christenings and weddings in this small, traditional church.

The church can be reached by car or foot. During the summer months a community minibus operates a free service to and from the church. The church is accessible for wheelchairs.

Chapel of Prophet Elias

This little chapel is situated on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the nearby islands. It was rebuilt in 1960 on the ruins of an older church. The chapel is accessed via a traditional stone-paved path that begins at the foot of the hill, on the outskirts of Panagia village. The ascent is a steep 30-minute hike. During the summer months a minibus operates a free service to and from Panagia.
