Folegandros is a lovely untouched island with relaxing atmosphere, hospitality and nice beaches which is close to Santorini and Milos. The landscape of Folegandros is dry hills with dry stone walls overlooking the deep blue sea. Folegandros has an area of 32.216 square km and there are 765 inhabitants on the island. It is 104 nautical miles away from Piraeus port.
The “capital”, Chora, is built on the edge of a 200-metre high cliff. The port of Folegandros can be found in the small village of Karavostasis. The Ecological and Folklore Museum can be found in the Ano Meria village.
Folegandros has 3 small villages, Chora, Karavostasis and Ano Meria. Folegandros offers peace and quietness to any tourist and you won’t find the usual nightclubs and bars on the island.
History
There is not a lot known about the history of the island of Folegandros. Its inhabitants were Dorians and they later came under Athenian rule. The island contained a polis (city-state) called Pholegandros which was sited in Chora and appears on Athenian tribute lists between 425/4 and 416/15 BCE.
The islands typography is very rugged and therefore it was called the iron Pholegandros. Marco Sanudo, the Venetian conquered the island in 1207 and it remained under Venetian rule until 1566 when the Ottoman Turks took over. In the 19th century the Greeks reclaimed the island again.
