Things to see and do on Donoussa

Caves

Donoussa has two caves that can be visited only by boat. The first is Fokospilia cave with its turquoise waters. The cave is said to be the home of seals during the winter and therefore the Greek name Fokospilia means “cave of the seals”. Fokospilia cave can be found on the eastern side of the island.

The other cave is on the north western side of the island, at the bay of Ksilobati and is called Tihos cave. There are extraordinary stalactites hanging inside this cave.

Church of Stavros (Holy Cross)

The Church of Stavros gets its name for the resurrection of the Holy Cross. The church was constructed at the end of the 1800s. The first church fell and was rebuilt in 1902 where it currently stands. The church is built in Cycladic architecture with blue and white as the dominating colours. Next to the dome is a bell tower with 3 bells.

On the 14th of September a festival is held for the island’s patron saint.

Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary)

The small church of Virgin Mary is built on top of a hill in the village of Stavros. The church was built in 1892 and it has a stunning view over the island. Sunsets are amazing from there.
